France is one of the most popular study destinations in Europe, known for its high-quality education, affordable tuition at public universities, and vibrant culture. Indian students who plan to study in France for more than 90 days must apply for a long-stay student visa (VLS-TS – Visa Long Séjour valant Titre de Séjour). The process requires proof of admission, financial means, health insurance, and accommodation plans. French visas are usually processed in 2–4 weeks, but students are advised to apply at least 3 months before the course start date.
🔹 Eligibility & Application
Must have a confirmed admission or pre-enrolment (pré-inscription) from a recognized French university or higher education institution.
Apply online via Campus France and then book a visa appointment with the French consulate.
For students under 28, admission through Campus France procedures (Etudes en France) may be mandatory.
🔹 Required Documents
Valid passport (at least 6 months validity beyond intended stay).
Admission letter / pré-inscription from the French university.
Completed visa application form (VLS-TS) and recent passport photos.
Proof of financial means to cover tuition and living costs.
Health insurance covering the entire stay in France (minimum coverage €30,000).
Proof of accommodation (university residence, private rental, or guarantee from host).
Academic transcripts & diplomas.
Proof of French or English language proficiency, depending on course language.
Civil status documents (birth certificate, marriage certificate if applicable).
🔹 Funding Requirements
French authorities require proof of funds to cover living expenses (~€615/month).
Total for 12 months: ~€7,380.
Accepted proofs:
• Bank statements (student or sponsor).
• Scholarship letters.
• Education loan sanction letters.
• Parental or sponsor affidavit confirming financial support.
Unlike the UK, France does not require funds to be held for 28 days, but consistency of bank statements is important.
🔹 Tuition Fee Payment / Deposit
Most public universities charge low tuition (€170–€380/year for undergraduates, €243–€380 for postgraduates).
Private institutions may charge higher fees (€5,000–€15,000/year).
Payment receipt is usually not required to get the visa, but proof of tuition or scholarship strengthens the application.
🔹 Visa Processing Timeline
Average processing: 2–4 weeks after submission to the French consulate.
During peak intake (August–September), processing may take up to 6 weeks.
Students should apply at least 3 months before course start.
Once the visa is issued, it acts as a residence permit for the first year (VLS-TS).
🔹 Work Rights
Students can work up to 964 hours/year (~20 hours/week) during term time.
Full-time work allowed during official university breaks.
Work permits are automatically included with the VLS-TS.
Post-graduation: Eligible for a temporary residence permit (APS – Autorisation Provisoire de Séjour) to find a job or start a business.
🔹 Application Tips
Apply through Campus France first if required.
Ensure bank statements and sponsor documents are consistent and clear.
Obtain accommodation proof early — required for visa appointment.
Purchase comprehensive health insurance covering entire stay.
Apply for visa 2–3 months before semester starts to allow for delays.
